We are dedicated to creating the world where the dream of radical freedom rooted in care becomes reality.

It’s only been 191 years since the Slavery Abolition Act 1833 was first passed in the United Kingdom. However, Britain has been attempting to end the practice of slavery since William the Conquerer banned it between Bristol and Ireland in 1080. Despite the very real presence of Black people in Britain, from descendants of Roman soldiers to Black Tudors, Britain went from fighting slavery as a core part of it’s identity to using that identity to specifically benefit white bodied people by denigrating Black people as non-human.

The legacy of colonialism encompasses everything from taking resources from ‘the Global South’ to re-narrating histories of communities centring the colonial encounter as the start of ‘history’ instead of centuries living in connection with the world and improving the ways of being for future generations.

From Britain to the rest of the world, colonialism was perfected to endure even without Britain’s oversight. The so-called ‘US’, ‘Canada’, ‘Australia’, ‘New Zealand’, and ‘South Africa’ are all occupied by descendants of colonists who displaced indigenous peoples on their own lands. Before colonising nearly 25% of the world, the British Empire first practised its colonial muscle in the Scottish Highlands where it perfected the tactic later used to institutionalise ‘Indian Boarding Schools’ as a tool of cultural and ethnic genocide.

We cannot escape the trauma of the colonial encounter, nor the legacy of the violence of the dismemberment that occurred over our lands, bodies, and identities. Our job is to re-member our histories, to exalt our bodies, to live as complexly and diversely as we possibly can. This includes white-bodied people re-membering their own humanity, because it is impossible for people who are complicit with the legacy of violence to remain ‘human’.
