Sophia Kaur

  • To locate myself and so others can locate me: I am mid-30 year old June Gemini born and raised on Matinecock land (so-called New York City), later moving to Alba (Scotland) in 2019 to be with my Caledonii (so-called Pictish) partner after knowing them since 2004.

I was born to and raised by Punjabi Sikhs who fled State violence in 1982, and consider myself in exile ever since trying to piece the history together in a family too traumatised to speak.

I am racialised as Brown, pathologised as generally ‘mad’ and an AuDHDer. I am gendered as a woman. I have and continue to experience colourism, features sexism casteism, and in some cases ageism when people consider me ‘too young’ or ‘unprofessional’ due to the pathology and radicalisation. I practice disrupting colonial logic, and am sought as a steward by others who are navigating their own disruptive journeys. My ambition is to be an auntie to the community that meets me at the margins.

Academically, I have a degree in Paralegal Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies, Social work, and International Relations. I’m currently in the process of studying (de)coloniality seeking to sew together trauma, silence, and (in)security at the University of Glasgow. What this looks like in practice is connecting State and structural violence and how individuals replicate this violence interpersonally doing the work for the colonial logic. My remedy? We must first seek to locate colonial logic within ourselves by shining a light on it and living Otherwise. I am guided by my ancestors, both by blood and veneration who nourished Matinecock land.
